There's a lot to this painting. Probably too much to post to facebook, but I'll try to touch on the most obvious... This portrait, in the series of Tree Women (although coming more FROM the "tree" than being the tree) is about letting go, rising up and speaking our truth - which is not always easy - or pretty. It's about the freedom that comes from honoring oneself. It's about no longer being held by guilt (the hood becoming more of a royal cape than a means to hide self), obligation (the things that tie us down inappropriately so) and the punishment we allow from others and, more importantly, from self.
The colors chosen for this work signify first, the chakra's. Fall colors are used to represent the beauty that arises out of "death". The white representing purity - not in any sort of moral way - but more about natural or organic perfection, less about sin and more about perfection like we would see in a newborn chil...
Theresa Johnson is a wife, mother, artist, and writer. She and her husband David, photographer and owner of Star Prairie Gallery, live in Wisconsin where they enjoy spending time with their family. Theresa, artist and owner of Star Prairie Studio, spent years working as a business analyst for the State of Minnesota before becoming disabled in 2009 by Lupus, Sjogren’s Syndrome and Rheumatoid Arthritis . Her writings speak to life lived with a chronic and incurable disease. Her paintings represent that journey, often times exploding with energy and color, symbolizing qualities such as beauty, strength, vulnerability and grace.
