This was a fun one for me. A few years ago my husband took some night pictures on St. Pete Beach. There was a lightning storm going on so he walked out onto a pitch black beach with an open shutter and just started snapping. I didn't know that I was going to go in that direction when I first started this work, but something along the way brought those old photos to my mind. Without searching for them, I painted my memories of that night. After this was completed I asked him to look for those pictures. How fun to see the similarities of my memory on canvas. It brings a whole different appreciation for the painting when one looks at them. I would be happy to share the photos with anyone interested. Make sure to zoom in to see the textures. Hope you enjoy St. Pete Beach at Midnight as much as we did!

It does look as though you've enjoyed painting this one Theresa! I love your free flowing paint that is the lightning. Can I ask though, what is the concrete rectangle? Was it on the beach, or is it something that the image required compositionally?
Theresa Marie Johnson replied:
It actually is something on the beach - but I felt it worked good compositionally as well. When my husband walked out onto the beach it was as if nothing was there - other than the sound of the ocean. It was not until the picture was taken that you could see things in it. This object was the backside of a "two-seater" cabana type thing. It was like a box on the beach. On the other side was a seat for two, inside the box. Hard to explain...but hopefully you get the idea. Thanks for the comments and for asking the question. It's nice to know you contemplate these things!! :-)
