Description
"The formal release from guilt, obligation, or punishment."
There's a lot to this painting. Probably too much to post to facebook, but I'll try to touch on the most obvious... This portrait, in the series of Tree Women (although coming more FROM the "tree" than being the tree) is about letting go, rising up and speaking our truth - which is not always easy - or pretty. It's about the freedom that comes from honoring oneself. It's about no longer being held by guilt (the hood becoming more of a royal cape than a means to hide self), obligation (the things that tie us down inappropriately so) and the punishment we allow from others and, more importantly, from self.
The colors chosen for this work signify first, the chakra's. Fall colors are used to represent the beauty that arises out of "death". The white representing purity - not in any sort of moral way - but more about natural or organic perfection, less about sin and more about perfection like we would see in a newborn child. Perfect simply because we "are".
This work, like others in the series has no beginning in my mind. I start with plaster and paper and mold with my hands and my heart. I have NO intention when I begin. The plaster and paper are white, and when wet, do not lend themselves to things easily distinguished. Even when dry, I have to paint over the canvas with a color just so that I can begin the process of "seeing". I think look at the canvas for about a week. Turning it every which way until something arises. I cannot tell you how wondrous that moment is. There is usually great frustration prior to that moment. Much like the feeling you have when you need to say something and just can't find the words. Painfully so. The moment this work revealed itself...herself...myself...was very exciting for me. And as I painted on her, it became clear what the message was.
Let go.
Rise up.
Speak your truth.
