Description
Water is amazing stuff.
As anybody who has spent time in the desert landscape knows, the surroundings – dry and sere, arid and inhospitable to the casual traveler – change along the banks of a river.
Here, trees and brush grow lushly, tapping into the life giving and life sustaining flow of water. It is odd that something we so take for granted (how often do we turn on the tap and give no thought to what flows out?) is so much more precious than the items our corporate dominated society values?
After all, as valuable as a car is, as beautiful as a ruby is, as amazing as a smart phone is, they all fade far into the background when compared to the value of water. We can live without cards, jewels, and electronic devices, but we cannot survive without water.
The artwork, Autumn on the Fremont, invites the viewer to step onto the banks of the Fremont River, a 95-mile stretch of blue ribbon that flows through Southeastern Utah, USA. This particular stretch is painted from a spot at Capitol Reef National Park.
It is a warm day in autumn, the middle of the day when the sun is high and casting its light over the landscape. The trees are turning their various and glorious shades of orange and red, yellow and gold, coral and rust, contrasting with the intense blue of the river they surround.
So lush is the foliage, so exuberantly growing near the water, that it is difficult to get down to the banks, but it is worth the scramble so that we can dip our feet in the coolness. Wading under the brilliant sun, we experience heat and coolness, light and shadow.
It is quiet here, the only sound the ripple of the current. What a perfect place to spend the afternoon.
